Upward Roots was founded to develop leadership and empower under-resourced youth through youth-led, youth-driven community service.

Participants engage in a dynamic curriculum focused on leadership and community service, promoting the idea that each and every young person can be a positive changemaker in their community.

youth roots program

Youth Roots is designed for 5th and 6th grade students, who engage in a dynamic curriculum focused on leadership and community service, promoting the idea that each and every young person can be a positive changemaker in their community.

The program runs for ten weeks, after-school, during the fall and spring. Participants identify issues they are passionate about in their communities and design and implement youth-led service projects to support those needs. Throughout the program, participants develop social emotional skills such as empathy, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork. Not only are students empowered as a result of this service experience, they inspire others to be changemakers, as well.

collaborative partnerships

While we are passionate about Oakland, we recognize that youth across the Bay Area deserve access to Upward Roots, too. Through our local Oakland successes and word of mouth, we have expanded our programming via critical collaborative partnerships.

Upward Roots partners exclusively with Bay Area nonprofit organizations and currently sees its program in action in East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Redwood City and San Jose.
